2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Crankshaft Seal to Ensure Leak-Free Operation on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Both Viton half seals on the crankshaft rear main bearing should always be changed together to guarantee the system does not leak. First, you should get rid of the transmission inspection cover, the oil pan, main bearing cap brace and then the rear main bearing cap (No.7). Move the seal out of the fairly large groove on top and then carefully remove the lower half of the seal from the bearing cap. Apply a very thin coat of engine oil to the area of the crankshaft around the seal and also coat the perimeter of the seal itself with engine oil during installation. Position the seal into the groove on the cylinder block so that its lip is front of the engine. Squirt the Mopar Gasket Maker sealer onto the both sides of the cylinder block, spacing the dab to be 3 mm in diameter, while on the rear bearing cap spread a 2.3 mm thick bead, but not on the lip of the seal. Insert the penultimate seal into the bearing cap hole and be sure it is flush against the bottom pan rail of the block, then coat the outside curved surface with soap and the lip with oil. Foot the main bearing cap twice on its flats, then torque all main bearing bolts to 108 Nm. Secure the main bearing cap brace, then tighten its nuts to 47 Nm. After that, add the Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant to the corners of the rear main bearing cap and front cover and insert the oil pan gasket, oil pan and transmission inspection cover.
