2002 Jeep Wrangler Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can Drive Belt Tension Be Optimized for Peak Performance in Belt-Driven Engine Accessories on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Optimal function of belt-driven engine accessories depends on the drive belt being at the correct tension. You can find gauges for checking belts, so use the recommended gauge as directed. Put the gauge on the belt exactly in the center, touching only the belt's surface. Rotate the belts until the tension adjustment bracket just contacts the pump bracket. First, remove the negative battery cable from the battery, then unbolt both the idler pulley bolt and tension adjusting bolt and only then remove the accessory drive belt. The routing diagrams use the latest updates and the idler pulley is used instead of a power steering pump pulley for those without power steering. Should there be differences between the settings on these schematics and the Belt Routing Label underneath the hood, use the label instead. Always inspect the condition of all pulleys beforehand to ensure the serpentine belt is routed properly; the wrong pulley direction could cause the engine to overheat. Install the new belt, measure the tension with gauge C-4162 and tighten till the belt is within the correct tension. After that, tighten the idler pulley bolt and see if the belt tension needs to be altered.
