2002 Jeep Wrangler Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can a Water Pump Be Removed Without Affecting the Air Conditioning System on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The water pump can be taken out without letting the air conditioning system lose any coolant if it supports that. All engines have a water pump that turns the opposite way when in reverse and there's an R marked on the back of the impeller to confirm this. When in doubt, check your owner's manual; sometimes old engines have an opposite type of rotating water pump and using the wrong one results in engine overheating. The water pump impeller fits onto the back of the pump shaft and bearing assembly and the whole pump unit is serviced when needed. Never open the block drain plug(s) or the radiator draincock when the system is under pressure and warm, because this can lead to serious injuries. Reusable coolant should be drained into a different clean container if it looks clean. The first thing to do is detach the battery's negative terminal and drain all the fluid from the cooling system. Don't remove the four hub-to-water pump pulley nuts, but back off the bolts so they're slightly loose and you can easily remove the drive belt before the fan. After that, take away the accessory drive belt and the power steering pump using special clamp tools number 6094 or HPC-20 for larger clamps and always keep safety glasses on. Unplug the heater hose and lower radiator hose from the water pump fitting after that and take out the four nuts that were loosened to disassemble the fan blade and pulley assembly. Don't place the thermal viscous fan drive horizontally after taking out the fan/viscous fan drive assembly so that the silicone fluid does not leak into its bearings. Pull out the four bolts securing the pump, noting that one of them is different in size and remove the old gasket. After removing the pump, remember the position of the heater hose fitting before displacing it. Attach the heater hose fitting to the pump by using Mopar Thread Sealant With Teflon according to how the package says you should do it, if the pump is being replaced. Crosswise surface https://newread.com/cylinder-block-coating and water pump for signs of damage after cleaning the gasket mating areas. While making sure the silicone bead faces the water pump, set the gasket dry, use torque wrenches for screws to tighten them to 23 Nm and be sure you can spin the shaft without resistance. Fasten the radiator and heater hoses to the water pump, put the water pump pulley on the water pump hub and install the fan together with the four nuts, using torque of 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) at the water pump hub. Attach the power steering pump, ensuring the serpentine engine accessory belt is routed properly to avoid overheating and then put in place the accessory drive belt. Pour coolant into the radiator, reattach the battery cable and turn on the engine, looking for any leaking water while it gets hot.
