Removing the water pump from the air conditioning system is possible without removing the air first, if your system is so equipped. Reversing water pumps rotate clockwise and the letter R stamped into their back confirms this; forward water pumps should exist in some earlier models and fitting them backwards can lead to engine heating. To install the impeller, you press it onto the pump shaft and bearing assembly in the rear and the entire water pump is serviced at one time. First, take out the negative battery cable from the battery and let all the coolant drain. Don't remove the four fan hub-to-water pump pulley mounting nuts, but do remove the engine accessory
Drive Belt just before you take off the
Power Steering Pump. When working with constant tension hose clamps, take out the proper tools: special clamp tool number 6094 and Snap-On clamp tool number HPC20 for the bigger ones. Use safety glasses all the time. After the
Radiator and heater hoses have been taken off the water pump, unset the nuts that were loosened and remove the whole
Fan Blade assembly and pulley. You should not hold the thermal viscous drive in an upright position following its removal to keep the silicone fluid from dripping onto its bearing area. Remove all four bolts used to hold the pump, remembering that one is not the same as the others and dispose of the worn gasket. When changing the pump, take away the heater hose fitting and record its position. If you are changing the pump, install the heater hose fitting, using Mopar(r) Thread Sealant With Teflon, just as the instructions indicate. Rub the mating surfaces with a rag and look for any signs of holes or damage. While turning the shaft by hand, install the gasket so it faces the water pump, apply torque at 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.) to the mounting bolts while keeping the gasket clean and dry. Attach the radiator hoses to the water pump and fit the heater hoses to their positions, then mount the pulley on the hub of the water pump. Finally, install the fan using the four nuts, tightening them all to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Put back the power steering pump, making certain the serpentine engine drive belt is routed correctly so that incorrect rotation of the water pump will not overheat the system and put the accessory drive belt back on. Pour in the coolant, replace the battery connection, start the vehicle and watch for signs of a leak.
