You should first take off the remote ground cable from the left shock tower's ground stud and put an isolator in its place. Take out as much of the power steering fluid from the reservoir as you can, then move the steering wheel and front wheels forward and lock the wheel at the same time. Unlocking the pinch bolt and pushing the intermediate shaft off the rack and pinion shaft is all you need to do to disconnect them. Lift the vehicle and take out both the front wheel assemblies and then the fasteners joining the drive belt splash shield to the crossmember. Separate the nuts from the outer tie rod ends and use Remover, Special Tool C-3894-A, to take off the tie rod end studs. On the body, make marks to note the position of the front suspension crossmember in front and back, plus right and left. Disconnect the stabilizer bar bushing clamp-to-body bolts, find and unbolt the shock absorber clevis from the lower control arms and remove the bolts attaching the engine torque mount to the crossmember. Release the rack and pinion heat shield and power steering pressure hose from the crossmember by removing their holding screws and separately remove the fuel tube bundle support above that crossmember. Hold up the front suspension crossmember above the transmission jack, take out the bolts connecting it to the frame rails and drop it until the rack and pinion can come out. Remove the bolts joining the power steering rack and pinion with the crossmember, unattach the wiring harness from the power steering fluid pressure switch, pull out the pressure and return hoses and detach the wires leading from the rack and pinion to the pump. Place the required components from the previous rack and pinion into the new rack and pinion when installing it. To install, set the power steering rack and pinion on the front suspension crossmember and add all four mounting bolts, tighten them until the torque reaches 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Join the pressure and return hoses to the power steering system and tighten the nut at the tube joints to 31 Nm (275 in. lbs.). Place the front suspension crossmember and rack and pinion against the body of the car so that they are in line with the marks you made earlier. Install the rear bolts into the body, then install the front bolts and make sure all four are tightened to almost 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.) to hold the crossmember in its place. With a soft face hammer, bring the crossmember into position according to the marks and tighten all the bolts (at the rear and front) to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.). Ease the transmission jack to the ground, put the support back on the fuel tube, join the brake tube routing bracket and secure the power steering pressure hose routing clamps on the crossmember with a 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) torque. Set up the rack and pinion heat shield and fasten the bolts holding the engine torque mount with 65 Nm of torque (48 ft. lbs.). First, connect the shock absorber clevis-to-lower control arm bolts roughly, then put in the cool air heat shield and secure the tie rod end in the steering knuckle, tightened by 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Tighten all stabilizer bar bushing clamp-to-body bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and then attach the drive-belt splash shield back in place. Raise the car on jack stands and make sure they are still clear of the ball joint cap, then gently lower it so the car hangs on the front end only. Tighten the lower control arm bolt to the clevis to 92 Nm (68 ft. lbs.) and after that raise the vehicle, followed by removing the jack stands. Secure the wheel and tire sets, following a crisscross pattern at 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Check that the front wheels point straight forward and that the steering wheel lies in the center position before bracketing the coupler to the rack and pinion shaft. Place the intermediate shaft splines in line with those on the rack and pinion shaft, slide the shaft onto place and update the coupling pinch bolt to secure everything, turning it to 44 Nm (32 ft. lbs.). Remove the steering wheel holder, fill the power steering pump reservoir and perform the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation steps. At last, look for leaks, lower the truck, align the front wheels and tighten the tie rod jam nuts to a torque of 74 Nm or 55 ft. lbs.
