2003 Dodge Neon Sway Bar Kit Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Sway Bar Kit on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: To service the sway bar kit, first lift the vehicle and get rid of both sway bar links by continuing to hold the upper retainer/nut with a wrench as you turn the link bolt. Following this, extract both the sway bar cushion retainer bolts and retainer and then get rid of the sway bar and its cushions as one unit. Pull apart each cushion along the slit and then roll it off the bar. Check the cushions and links on your vehicle to confirm there are no worn-out parts, cracks, and distortions. Replace any parts that don't meet inspection. Once the sway bar is off, set the cushions on it by putting each side through the open slit, placing them at the ends of the straight segment on the topside of the bar. Be sure that the curve in the outboard ends of the sway bar faces down, so it doesn't interfere with the control arms below it. On the front suspension crossmember, align the bar with the end facing the engine, with the slits in the pads running toward the front and onto the raised beads indicated by the stampings on the crossmember. First, place the retainers over the raised beads' grooves and only partially tighten the bolts. Fit the bushings first to the bottom of the link bolt and pass them through the sway bar, link bushings inside, control arm, and upper retainer/nut and bushing. Drop the vehicle and if you can't reach the bolts, try using a platform hoist or an alignment rack to support the vehicle at curb height for access. Don't forget to snug up every sway bar link by rotating the bolt to 31 Nm (275 inch lbs.) and also tighten the cushion retainer bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.).
