2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on a 10 1/2 American Axle Rear Axle on 2003 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: To look after and repair the rear axle (10 1/2 American Axle), first take out the axle shaft flange bolts and the axle shaft. Afterward, get out the retainer ring from inside the axle shaft tube and the hub bearing nut locking key. Following this, bring the hub bearing nut off with Socket 8954 and unscrew the hub and bearings off the axle. Pry the seal from the backside of the hub and remove any inner parts that could be attached to the tube. Now, knock out the rear bearing and the hub bearing cups with a hammer and drift. Start by attaching the outer hub bearing cup, using Installer 8961 and Handle C-4171, then install the inner hub bearing cup with Installer 8962 and the same Handle C-4171. Briefly warm the bearings and cover them with the correct grease, then set the rear bearing and the new seal in place, using Installer 8963 and Handle C-4171. Slide the hub over the axle tube and fit the front bearing into place in the hub. Lay the hub and secure the Socket 8954 onto it. Rotate the hub as you tighten the bearing nut to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). Push in the axle assembly about 30 mm until the hub nut key slot meets the position of the axle tube's key slot, then add and set the locking key. The end play should fall between 0.025 - 0.25 mm (0.001 - 0.010 inch). After that, add the retainer ring so its ring end fits into the key slot and following this, place the axle shaft gasket before sliding.
