2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on an 11 1/2 American Axle Rear Axle on 2004 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Removing the flange bolts connecting the axle and the shaft should be the first step in service and repairing the 11 1/2 American Axle. Once the retainer ring from the axle shaft tube is out, remove the hub bearing nut locking key. Remove the Socket 8954 from the bearing nut and take the hub and bearings off the end of the axle. Remove both the front and back hub bearing seal and make sure to get rid of anything left on the axle tube inside the wheel. Now, take a hammer and a drift to pull out the rear bearing and the two hub bearing cups. Installing the bearing cups begins with the outer hub cup and Installer 8961; then you use Installer 8153 and Handle C-4171 for the inner hub. Add the proper wheel bearing grease to the bearings and then set in the rear bearing and a new grease seal with Installer 8963 and Handle C-4171. Place the end of the axle tube into the hub, then slide the hub into position. After that, add the front bearing to the inside of the hub. Place the hub bearing nut using Socket 8954 and tighten it to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) as you rotate the hub. Once the first nut is back about 30° away, line up the hub nut key slot with the axle tube's key slot and install the locking key. Threads should extend between 0.025 and 0.25 mm (0.01 - 0.001 inch) from the tip. After that, install the retainer ring with the ring end into the key slot, place a new axle shaft gasket and slide in the new axle shaft.
