2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Fuel Injector Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Fuel Injector on 2003 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: It's important to begin by removing the negative cables from both batteries and placing covers over their ends. After removing the breather and valve cover, disconnect the fuel line from the rail of the injector. Take apart the retainer nut of each tube and then use removal tool # 9015 to pull the connectors out of the cylinder head. After that, uninstall the required exhaust rocker arm assembly and cut off the injector solenoid wire nuts at the top of the injectors. Release the two fuel injector fastening bolts on the injectors you are working on. Swap the rocker housing mounting bolt for the mounting stud of tool # 9010, whether your clamps are tightened in a clamshell or with a pivoting handle. Put the clamshell halves on both sides of the fuel injector and fasten them together with the retainer sleeve. With the handle pivot nut open, press down the handle and remove the fuel injector straight up from the cylinder bore. Throw out the sealing washer that is found on the tip of the injector. If there are burrs, erosion, cracks or overheating signs on the fuel injector, replace it as soon as possible. Rub the bore of the fuel injector cylinder head with a wire brush from Cummins and clean it by blowing out any debris with compressed air. At the bottom of the injector, apply a light coating of clean engine oil to a new 1.5 mm shim. Put a new O-ring on the fuel injector, using a small amount of clean engine oil while doing so. Put the injector in the cylinder head bore so the high-pressure connector inlet faces the intake manifold and press it into place with your fingers. Install the fuel injector hold-down clamp and bolts and tighten every other bolt to equal pressure of 10 Nm. After that, reattach the solenoid wires and nuts and tighten them to a torque of 1.5 Nm. Replace the exhaust rocker arm assembly and make certain the exhaust valve lash is correct. Connect the high-pressure connector and its retainer nut, tightening them to 50 Nm with a torque tool and then push the high-pressure fuel line onto the same connector. After all is done, make sure to place the valve cover, insert the breather assembly and hook the negative battery cables back up.
