2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cable on 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: The process of servicing the rear parking brake cable begins by backing off the parking brake and lifting the vehicle up. Open the cable adjuster nut and slide the rear cables off the cable tensioner bracket. Remove the retainer clip on the left rear cable from the frame bracket and run the cable through. Squeeze the tabs on the left housing part and draw the cable down through the bottom of the chain stay. Draw out the right rear cable from its bracket and take out the wire retainers from the axle. Remove the rear wheels, along with their brake drums, then break each cable loose from the park brake lever and take out the cable guide spring. Press each cable tab next to the brake support plate and carefully remove the cables from that plate. At the beginning of installation, you should put in the guide spring for the cable and fit the brake drums. Gently reel the cable in and slot it into the hole in the brake support plate, to make sure it attaches to the park brake lever. Move each cable through the brake plate hole until the retainers lock in and only then attach and push the right cable retainer onto the front brakes' axle. Pull both cables into the frame bracket, check that the left retainer tabs are locked and put the retainer clip on the right, pushing the right cable through the top hole and left cable through the bottom hole. Slide the cables under the cable tensioner bracket, snap them into the cable connectors and then put back the wheel and tire assemblies. Adjust the park brake as explained, remove the supports and lower your vehicle.
