Q: How should seat belts, buckles, mounting hardware, and retractors be inspected and replaced during a seat belt service on 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: Any time a seat belt is serviced, make sure to complete an inspection looking for mistakes in installation, using or checking for damages on the belts, buckles, handles and retractors. If your belt has cuts or rough spots, replace it; if the metal belt is twisted, adjust it back to its normal position; tighten any loose buckles and immediately replace any belt with a damaged buckle, retractor or bent latch or anchor plate. It is important to never fix a seat belt and always buy and use replacement parts listed in the Mopar Parts Catalog. To remove the quick release connecting point, push the button on the anchor plate trim cover, lift the plate up and pull it off the anchor screw. Should you need to these, take out the screw that fastens the quick-release turning loop anchor plate to the inner roof rail. First, loosen the screw holding the anchor plate and clip to the steel section below the seat, next detach the belt guide from the seat back, slide the skirt on the rear seat edge to reach the shoulder belt anchor plate, insert the shoulder belt anchor plate under the seat back and pull the belt and retainer from the rear seat belt holder. When calibrating, pull the shoulder belt all the way out, place the retractor on the quick-release rear seat, fill the lower anchor hole with the plate between the rear seat cushion and the back of the seat, lift the skirt on the rear seat's back to expose the lower anchor plate and place it on the rear seat cushion reinforcement, flip the plastic belt guide on top of the seat back making sure the belt isn't twisted, position the shoulder belt retractor over the skirt and the lower anchor plate on the reinforcement, install and tighten the screw securing the lower anchor plate and retractor to the reinforcement below the rear seat cushion to 40 Nm (29 ft. lbs.), install and tighten the screw for the quick-release turning loop anchor plate onto the inner roof rail to 40 Nm (29 ft. lbs.), and engage the keyhole on the back of the turning loop anchor plate over the screw on the inner roof rail, sliding the anchor plate downward until it latches into place.
