Q: How to Safely Service Airbags and Replace a Faulty Front Seat Belt on 2003 Dodge Sprinter 2500?
A: Before you control any of the steering wheel, steering column, driver air bag, passenger air bag, seat belt tensioner or instrument panel components, disconnect the battery negative cable and wait two minutes for the air-bag system charge to empty. After any seat belt service, check all belts, buckles, mounting hardware, retractors and anchors for correct installation, full function and any damage, renewing or fixing any that is cut, frayed or torn; straightening crooked belts; tightening loose fasteners; and replacing any belts with defective buckles, retractors or bent latch or anchor plates from the Daimlerchrysler Mopar Parts Catalog. When changing a front seat belt and retractor due to damage, move the front seat all the way forward, remove the battery negative cable from the vehicle and wait for two minutes. Should it be equipped, detach and take out the plastic cover on the screw holding the front seat belt lower anchor to the side of the seat frame, remove the screw and remove the anchor. Pull out the trim panel from inside the inside B-pillar, detach the height adjuster trim from the ceiling at the B-pillar and then push the seat belt and lower anchor through the back of the height adjuster trim. Unscrew the nut that connects the front seat belt turning loop to the height adjuster and remove the loop after that. Remove the connector from the retractor in the vehicle harness, unfasten the screw at the back of the front seat belt guide retractor and take the retractor apart from the B-pillar. Place the front seat belt and retractor below and to the inner side where the guide slips into the locating notch in the B-pillar, attach and tighten the screws to 35 N.m (26 ft. lbs.). Secure the wire harness connector end for the seat belt tensioner firmly into its slot on the initiator, until you hear a loud audible click. Attach the front seat belt belt loop to the height adjuster, tighten the nut to 35 N.m (26 ft. lbs.), put the front seat belt strap and lower anchor behind the height adjuster trim and arrange the trim so it clicks into the adjuster's lug. Start by connecting the trim panel inside the B-pillar, put the seat belt anchor on the front of the outside seat frame and tighten it to 35 N.m (26 ft. lbs.). If the car has the cover, slip it over the hidden screw underneath the front seat belt and wait to reconnect the negative battery cable until you do the supplemental restraint system verification test after any supplemental restraint system repair.
