2004 Dodge Caravan Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid for the Transaxle on 2004 Dodge Caravan?
A: Read the vehicle's maintenance schedules to find out when to service the fluid and filter. Change the oil in the transmission using only Mopar ATF+4 and replace the filter when you do this as well. If you remove the transaxle, drain the fluid and replace the filter. Put the vehicle up on a hoist and under the transaxle pan, put a drain container. Unscrew all of the engine mount-to-engine crossmember cradle nuts and position the engine and transmission two inches higher to help remove the oil pan. Relax the bolts on the pan, tap a section to destroy the seal and remove the oil pan to let the fluid drain away. Put a new filter and o-ring into the valve body, clean the pan and magnet, reinstall the pan using Silicone Adhesive from Mopar (19 Nm - 165 inch lbs.). First, pour four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 through the opening of the dipstick, then start the engine and let it run for at least one minute while you move the selector lever to every mode, finishing in park or neutral. With the engine running, view the fluid level through the dipstick. If it is below the lowest mark (3 mm or 1/8 inch), add some and recheck it when the transaxle has heated appropriately (at 180°F.) Description Before using the dipstick tube fluid suction, be certain the transaxle is completely warm, use a suitable tool and make sure the suction device hits the lowest oil pan level for total fluid removal. Once the suction line is out, pour four quarts of ATF+4 in through the dipstick opening, start the engine, check the fluid level like you did before and make sure the dipstick is securely inserted after you stop.
