2004 Dodge Durango Starter Motor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Starter Motor for 3.7L or 4.7L Engines on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: Before starting any work on the starter motor, first separate the negative battery cable, disconnect it and put the vehicle safely on stands. Suction cup the vehicle back window, then let it down slowly and flip the vehicle. If the vehicle has 4WD and certain transmission, you'll need to remove the bolts from the support bracket, lift it slightly and unbolt the support tab underneath. If your vehicle has a manual gearbox, unbolt only bolt (9) and nut (8). For vehicles fitted with an automatic transmission, undo both bolts (3). Slide the starter motor (5 or 4) forward until the nose of the starter pinion housing passes the housing and remember not to hang the starter motor from the wire harness during this step. Drop the nose of the car and move the starter motor lower so you can take out the nut at the stud and unhook both the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet from the solenoid terminal stud and the wire harness connector from the connector on the solenoid terminal. When installing, connect the solenoid wire to the starter motor, place the battery cable (1) onto the solenoid stud and secure the battery cable nut (2), according to the tightness recommended by the manufacturer, so the starter motor is not suspended by the wire harness. Set the starter motor in position on the transmission, fix and tighten the lockwasher nut and bolt (don't tighten automatically pinch-type nuts-3) according to the manufacturer's torque and finally, secure the vehicle in the air, remove it and reattach the negative battery cable.
