2004 Dodge Intrepid Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Use a Shock Absorber Spring Compressor to Assemble the Front Strut on 2004 Dodge Intrepid?
A: Put a compressor, PSE tool W-7200 or another tool on the front strut spring to shorten it as the manual instructs, then attach the front strut gear to the wheel hub as described in the manual. If you already removed the coil spring, you can proceed to the following step, but if it's still in the spring compressor, turn it to the marked position before compressing. If the cover is apart from the coil spring, put the upper spring isolator in place and then install the dust shield, with the coil spring right under them. The seat and bearing with their dust shield should be fitted on top of the coil spring and the step has to be against the end of the coil. After that, set the lower spring isolator onto the lower spring seat on the strut, so the tabs correspond with the strut spring seat. The jounce bumper should be on the strut shaft, with its smaller end facing down. After this, mount the cup with the cupped side up on the bottom. Push the strut through the bottom end of the coil spring until the lower seat rests on the spring, with the inboard side of the strut matched to the flat area and the bearing of the seat and hold it with a clamp. Be certain to use the correct upper mount, the right one has a dot on the base and the 10 o'clock position is where the hole is found on the side. Put the strut upper mount over the top of the seat and bearing, only tighten the retaining nut loosely, use Special Tool 6864 Strut Nut Socket and hold the strut shaft as you tighten the retaining nut to 94 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Slowly release the tension by backing off the compressor drive all the way so that the upper mount and seat and bearing fit properly without becoming stuck. Push back the spring compressor hooks and take the lower part of the coil spring and strut out of the clamp before later putting the strut back inside the vehicle chassis.
