2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Starter Motor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: First, disconnect and isolate the negative cables from both batteries and lift up the vehicle to work on the starter motor. Take out the three bolts that mount the starter, move the starter forward and lift it so the nose of the starter pinion is free from the housing. Move the nose downwards and ensure the starter motor is lowered enough to gain access to the wiring harness, then remove the nuts attaching the wiring harness to the starter, remembering to save the aluminum spacer before you remove the whole starter motor from the engine. For installation, when the spacer is included, grip and position it against the starter placed at the back of the engine. Join the solenoid wire to the starter motor, tighten the nut, then connect the battery cable to the starter stud and proved the right torque, so the starter motor is not held by the harness. Put the starter at the proper place with regard to the transmission and for automatic transmissions, slide the cooler tube bracket into the correct spot too. Fix both the starter motor brackets to the engine with the torque standard, drop the car to the floor and then link both cables from the main battery to the starter battery.
