2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before servicing or fixing axle bearings, remove the shaft flange bolts and the axle shaft. Now, get the axle shaft tube's retainer ring and the jacking hub nut locking key out as the next steps. Loosen the hub bearing nut with Socket 8954 on the old glider, remove the hub and pull the bearings from the axle. Remove the hub bearing seal from the rear of the hub and take out any rubber from the inside of the axle tube as well. Next, break out the rear bearing and the hub bearing cups with a hammer and drift. For the initial mounting, insert the outer hub bearing cup using Installer 8961 and Handle C-4171 and then the inner hub bearing cup using Installer 8153 and the same Handle C-4171. Put some of the recommended wheel bearing grease in the bearing, then fit the rear bearing and new grease seal using Installer 8963 and Handle C-4171. Push the hub up onto the axle tube and place the front bearing inside the hub. Turn the bearing nut onto the hub bearing using Socket 8954 and tighten the nut to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) as the hub rotates. Stop the wheel about 30° back and place the next hub nut key back into the axle tube key slot. The dimension on the end play should measure either 0.025 - 0.25 mm or 0.01 - 0.001 inch. Instead of the handle, put the retainer ring in the key hole with the ring facing out. Lay a new gasket on top of the axle and slide the shaft back into place.
