2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Catalytic Converter on a 4.0L Engine on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Service of the catalytic converter for a 4.0L engine should start with raising and supporting the vehicle. Add some heat valve lubricant to the bolts and nuts, then wait 5 minutes before you remove the nuts from the link between the catalytic converter and exhaust pipe flange. Unfasten the clamp at the converter and muffler intersection and separate the wire connection to the oxygen sensor. Heat up the connection between the catalytic converter and the muffler using a torch until the metal glows cherry red, then keep turning the catalytic converter until it separates from the muffler and exhaust pipe. See if the disease of the stainless steel body is due to heating it up and inspect any heat shield to ensure it is intact and not bent. Worries about internal issues can be resolved by gently tapping the bottom of the catalyst with a rubber mallet. Attach the catalytic converter to the end of the exhaust pipe and tighten its nuts just to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) Now, fit the muffler over the catalytic converter, aligning the groove on the muffler with the slot on the converter and bolt the exhaust clamp securely at those parts, tightening the clamp nuts to 35 ft. lbs. torque. Connect the oxygen sensor wires, set the vehicle on the ground, start the engine and check for exhaust problems against the body panels.
