2004 Jeep Liberty Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely and Effectively Remove and Reinstall a Radiator on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: Cut the power, drain the system and let it cool before taking out the radiator to avoid getting burned by coolant. Reusable coolant should be drained into a clean container if it is not dirty. Use the right tools for these hose clamps, either the 6094 special clamp or the HPC-20 Snap-On clamp and always ensure you have your safety glasses on. Before taking out any rubber air seal, mark its original spot on the body or the A/C condenser-return them there to avoid overheating. Step one is to break the negative battery cable connection, drain the coolant from the radiator, take off the front grill and uninstall the fan (if it came with one). After that, remove two radiator bolts, detach both lines connected to the transmission cooler, unplug the electric fan, take off the lines to the power steering cooler and the upper and lower radiator hoses. There are two dowel pins in the bottom of the radiator that are placed into rubber tips pressed in the lower crossmember. It is possible to take out the radiator and cooling fan as one group of parts. Gently take out the radiator while avoiding both your car's components and the air conditioning condenser. If you need to clean the lime, apply cold water behind the radiator with a garden hose and use compressed air from a distance to remove debris. Look at the radiator's cooling fins to make certain they are not bent or damaged and inspect each plastic end tank for cracks or leaks. Be sure the rubber air seals are correctly fitted before setting up the doors. Put the radiator and fan shroud into the car below, pushing them with the dowels lined up through the rubber grommets. Screw the coolant reserve/overflow tank hose onto the connector, place the transmission cooler lines and tighten the bolts on the radiator as you connect the upper and lower hoses, making sure the tangs are down. Reattach the electric cooling fan, put the grill in place and fix the cooler fan onto the engine. Turn the fan blades by hand to see if anything obstructs the fan shroud, fill the coolant tank, secure the battery cable and drive the car to see if any leaks appear.
