2004 Jeep Wrangler Rocker Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain the Rocker Arm Assembly with Camshafts Installed on 2004 Jeep Wrangler?
A: To service the rocker arm in-vehicle when camshafts are there, first remove the cylinder head cover, fuel rail and spark plugs. While turning the engine, make the camshaft lobe of the follower to be removed land on its base circle, so the piston is lowered below TDC by 6.3 mm or 0.25 inch. Make a mark on the ground for where each cam follower assembly will be assembled if new bearings are not needed. Use both Special Tools 8215 and 8436 to gently press down the valve assembly so that you can remove the rocker arm. At times, cutting extra brackets or trimming components is necessary to make room for the tool. Check all the rocker arms for any damage and change them when necessary. When scrolling the cam, cover the surface of the rocker arm with clean engine oil first, then insert Special Tools 8215 and 8436 and gently move down the valve assembly until you place the rocker arm on both the hydraulic lifter and valve stem. Perform the installation for every rocker arm and then add the spark plugs, fuel rail and cylinder head cover.
