2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install the Alternator Positioned Above the Oil Filter and Axle Shaft on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: You will find the generator above both the oil filter and the axle shaft. The first step is to remove the negative battery cable. Take out the 2 bolts at the very top of the generator heat shield and, following that, remove the nut on the upper T-bolt adjustment bracket. Get the vehicle off the ground and lift it, then undo the lug nuts and remove the right front wheel as well as the splash guard. After that, unfasten the lower heat shield bolt and remove the generator heat shield. First, pull the field circuit from the generator, take off the B+ terminal nut and wire and release the accessory drive belt t-bolt. Cut the pencil strut away and remove the bolt that connects the underneath of the generator. Remove the generator belt and take out the axle retaining nut too. Separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle, after this remove the 2 bolts that fasten the bearing support to the axle and pull the assembly out, placing a container underneath the transmission to capture any leaking fluid. First, lift the generator out of the lower attachment and lay it aside and then unscrew the lower bracket for the generator. Exit the axle shaft hole in the wheel well and put the generator there, attaching it to the T-bolt and tightening the nut loosely. Screw the mounting bracket from the generator to the block then tighten the screws to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Fasten the lower pivot bolt for the generator only enough so it does not move, then . Attach the field circuit to the generator, then place the axle shaft assembly and fasten the bolts for the bearing support so they are tightened to 54.2 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Slide the shaft into the steering knuckle, connect the lower control arm to the steering knuckle and fasten the bolt at 94.9 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Install the axle retaining nut and fasten it to 244 Nm or about 180 ft. lbs. Place and tighten the generator belt and then tighten the accessory drive belt t-bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Set the lower generator pivot bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), install the pencil strut and then put the generator heat shield into place. Secure the lower heat shield bolt to 54.2 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), put on the accessory drive splash shield and fit the right front wheel. Drop the vehicle and tighten the nut to the upper bracket until it reaches 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). After that, insert 2 bolts into the heat shield on the generator and tighten them to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.) and finally, reattach the negative battery cable.
