2005 Dodge Caravan Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Rear Axle Shaft on 2005 Dodge Caravan?
A: Raise the car on a hoist until the rear wheels are up in the air, remove the wheel and carefully take out the axle shaft. After that, remove the cotter pin, the nut lock, the wave washer, the hub nut and washer. Since the half shaft outer CV joint functions as a bolt for the hub/bearing assembly, it's important to add and torque a bolt if the vehicle will be placed on its wheels, to avoid the hub assembly from coming loose. Following that, take out the bolts holding down the inner half shaft. You need to use the spring tension in the half shaft, first slightly compress its inner joint, pull down on it to clear the rear differential output, then pull the whole half shaft assembly out of the vehicle to remove it. Install the outer CV joint stub shaft into the hub bearing first for installation. Adjust the inner half shaft joint slightly inwards and lift the inner CV joint until the rear differential output flange is engaged. Attach the inner half shaft retaining bolts and turn them until a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) is reached. Then, align and secure the half shaft washer and hub nut, but remember to no torque them until the car is lifted. Following that, fit the wave washer, nut lock and a new cotter pin, although ensure that the cotter pin prongs go tightly around the nut lock on the hub. At the end, put on the rear wheel and tighten each lug nut to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
