Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Wheel Bearing on a Front-Wheel-Drive on 2005 Dodge Caravan?
A: Raise the front-wheel-drive vehicle, remove the wheel, then access the rear wheel bearing. After that, detach the brake drum or disc brake caliper and rotor from the hub and bearing. If your vehicle has antilock brakes, take out the secondary (yellow) clip in the rear of the wheel speed sensor, press the metal retaining clip up to unseat the sensor head and finally pull the sensor out of the hub and bearing. Get rid of the 4 bolts that hold the hub and bearing on the rear axle. Should corrosion make removing the hub and bearing tough by hand, use Remover, Special Tool 8458, first by taking out the two outboard spring plate bolts, threading Threaded Guide Pins into the hub and bearing mounting bolt holes and installing the Screw Mount, Special Tool 8458-2. Place Push Plate, Special Tool 8458-1, on the ends of your Threaded Guide Pins, fill the dimple on the Push Plate with a little bit of grease and fit Forcing Screw, Special Tool 8458-3, through the Screw Mount, inserting it from the rear. Tighten the Forcing Screw against where the dimple is in the Push Plate which will remove the hub and bearing from the axle, then remove the tool and tighten those two outer spring bolts to 75 ft. lbs. Now that the hub/bearing is off the axle and brake plate, attach the 5 rear brake plate to axis bolts with the 4 hub and bearing in place, followed by the rear brake support plate. Line up the rear hub and bearing with the mounting bolts, start turning the bolts into place inside the hub and bearing and secure everything with a crisscross pattern until fully tight. Whenever installing your brakes, make sure the wheel speed sensor is clean and dry if you have antilock brakes. If the metal sensor retaining clip is not on the bottom of the air conditioner in the middle, remove it from the top, slide it on from the bottom and push it up to fit it into place. Attach the sensor head to the hub and bearing at the rear, place the index tab into the notch and press it until it clicks into place on the metal clip. Instead, set the secondary (yellow) clip over the wheel speed sensor, insert the tabs and then put in the brake drum or brake rotor, plus the caliper. Then, put on the wheel and tire and tighten the wheel nuts to 135 Nm. Adjust your brakes in the back, put the vehicle down, then go for a short drive to test its brakes.
