2006 Dodge Caravan Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Wheel Bearing on 2006 Dodge Caravan?
A: Always begin with raising and supporting the vehicle, then taking off the wheel and tire, then removing the brake drum or caliper and rotor from the hub and the bearing in the rear. Should you have antilock brakes, release the sensor by removing the secondary (yellow) clip, lifting the metal clip upward to release the sensor and pulling it out of the hub and bearing. After that, disconnect the four bolts that hold the hub and bearing to the rear axle. Should manual hub and bearing removal be complicated due to corrosion, use Special Tool 8458 by first removing the two outboard spring plate bolts, inserting the Threaded Guide Pins into the hub and bearing mounting bolt holes and mount the Screw Mount, Special Tool 8458-2, with the tool number facing the hub and bearing. Apply grease to the dimple of the Push Plate, then use Forcing Screw, Special Tool 8458-3, to install it in the Screw Mount thread from the back and the Push Plate at both ends of the Threaded Guide Pins. Use the Forcing Screw to push the hub and bearing from the axle by placing the screw into the dimple, then take out the tool to put back the two spring plate bolts and tighten them to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) Bolt the four hub and bearings to axle mountings into the holes on the rear axle flange and then install the rear brake support plate over the top of these bolts. Guide the rear hub and bearing so that their bolts are aligned with the holes, fully start the bolts into the hub and bearing and tighten them diagonally until everything rests securely on the rear flange, using a torque of 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.). If antilock brakes are used, always clean and dry the wheel speed sensor before fitting it into the hub and bearing cap. If the retaining clip for the metal sensor hangs below the forestock, tilt the forestock backward, insert the clip and push it up until it locks. Line up the index tab on the wheel sensor inside the hub and bearing with the notch in the rear and push it in until it clicks with the metal retaining clip. Then, put on the secondary (yellow) retaining clip over the wheel speed sensor head, start by attaching the brake drum or disc brake rotor and brake caliper, continue with the wheel and tire, finishing by turning the wheel nuts tightly to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Adjust the rear brakes if needed, lower the vehicle and use it on the road to check its brakes function properly.
