2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Shift Cable on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Lower the car, put it in PARK and raise it up to start repairing the shift cable. Remove the cable eyelet at the transmission manual shift lever and draw out the cable adjuster from its mounting holder. Carefully lower the vehicle and unbolt the dash panel soft pad, then remove the grommet through this opening. Take off any required Trim panel from the steering column, cut the BTSI electrical connector, cut the gearshift cable below the pin at the dash panel and pull the cable through the lower bracket and into the DBSI assembly onto the lower column. Take out the gearshift cable from the vehicle. To install, send the transmission side of the cable through the hole in the dash panel and place the cable grommet firmly into the opening. Insert the cable into the bracket for the steering column, ensuring you connect the retaining ears and push the cable eyelet onto the ball stud of the shift lever. Lift the car once more, select the manual lever for the transmission in the "PARK" position and rotate the prop shaft to confirm the transmission is set there. Take the cable and attach its ears into the transmission mounting bracket, then bend the end of the cable to fit its eyelet onto the manual shift lever ball stud. Release the vehicle, lock the shift cable adjuster by pressing on the indicator tab below, check the transmission range sensor is operating properly and set the gearshift cable and BTSI to the ideal position.
