2006 Dodge Caravan Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Perform a Fluid and Automatic Transmission Filter Service on a Transaxle on 2006 Dodge Caravan?
A: The manual for your vehicle explains the best time intervals for fluid and filter service on the transaxle. Select Mopar ATF+4 (Automatic Transmission Fluid), do an oil change with the filter and clean the magnet in the oil pan with a dry cloth at that time. After taking apart the transaxle, change the fluid and the filter. First, lift the vehicle on a hoist and put a drain container below the transaxle oil pan. Set the pan bolts to loose the pan, tap one place each time to relieve pressure, then drain the fluid before taking off the oil pan. Set a new filter and O-ring at the bottom of the valve body, wipe the oil pan and magnet and attach the pan using Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant, tightening the bolts to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.). Put four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 through the dipstick opening, start the car and let it run idle for about a minute. Press the parking and service brakes and, while the vehicle is stopped, move the selector lever to all settings before ending in park or neutral. Examine the level of the transaxle fluid and put in more until it is 3 mm (1/8 inch) below the lowest line on the dipstick, then look at the fluid level again when the transaxle has reached operating temperature (180°F). Make sure the dipstick is well inside the tube to keep dirt out of the transaxle. When using the dipstick tube fluid suction method, confirm the transaxle is at its full temperature, pick a suitable suction unit and lower the suction pipe directly to the bottom of the transaxle oil pan as the fluid is pumped out. Use the recommended method to empty the fluid, take out the suction tube, pour four Mopar ATF+4 quarts through the hole, start the car and repeat the steps done before to keep the level correct.
