2006 Dodge Grand Caravan Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Water Pump on 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: First, make sure to drain the coolant from the system, then get rid of the accessory drive belt shield and factory accessory drive belt. Once you have removed the water pump's pulley bolts, be sure that the pulley is sandwiched between the housing and the drive hub so that it can leave with the water pump during removal. After the openings of the belt align with the water pump drive hub spokes, slide the pulley inwards into its position. With the pulley in a convenient place, take out the bolts holding the water pump in place and remove the pump with the loose pulley. Get rid of the old seal, wipe off dirt in the seal groove and make sure not to scratch the pump and covering surfaces for the timing chain during cleaning. Examine the water pump for defects from damage, cracks, wetness under the weep hole, friction on the impeller or rough and loose bearings. It is OK for a black, brown or grey stain of weepage on an engine to dry on its own, but if the area is wet, check the cooling by putting 15-18 psi on the pressure tester. If coolant is leaking constantly from the weep hole, change out the water pump. Once the pump is out, slide a new seal into the water pump housing groove and make sure the water pump pulley is loosely fixed in the area below the pump housing. After bolting the water pump and pulley to the timing chain case cover with 12 Nm torque, tighten the 8 bolts securing the new seal. Put the pulley on the water pump hub, bolt it and tighten to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Raise the pump's arm, then move the pump by hand to confirm all is functioning properly before fitting the accessories, positioning the accessory drive belt and the drive belt shield and adding coolant.
