2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Universal Joint with an Injected Ring on 2006 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: When performing the service of a universal joint with an injected ring, secure the shaft yoke in a vise first. Place the receiver of the press onto the propeller shaft yoke, then press the bearing caps out of the shaft yoke until they release. On the shaft yoke, remove the lower cap, turn the shaft over and use the press to install the second U-joint bearing cap. After taking off the flange and U-joint from the shaft yoke, fit the U-joint press with the receiver onto the flange and press out the U-joint bearing caps with the bearing cap on the outside removed. Finish pressing the U-joint bearing cap in place and then take out the whole U-joint from the flange. Slide the new joint into the flange with one bearing cap, position the press with the receiver over the flange and bearing cap and turn the handle until the snap ring groove exits the flange. Set the bearing in the housing, add the snap ring to it and then apply pressure to the cap while it passes over the flange until the snap ring is in the groove. After that, pop in the U-joint flange into the yoke, position the press with its receiver and bearing cap over the yoke and push down on the bearing cap until the snap ring groove passes through the yoke. Last, affix the press fitting so the receiver rests on the bearing cap and yoke, press inside the snap ring groove until you reach the yoke and put the last snap ring in place.
