2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Shaft for Rear HD on 2006 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Lift the car on a hoist while the transmission is in neutral. Put a mark on the propeller shaft, pinion flange and propeller shaft flange at the time of installation. Mark the positions of the manual transmission flange and propeller shaft flange for any vehicles having a manual transmission. If your engine has a center bearing, sketch its place on the center bearing bracket to help yourself, then hold up the shaft and unbolt the center bearing. When that is done, come out of the gearbox and remove the bolts securing the pinion flange to the propeller shaft, then pull the propeller shaft off the output shaft and mark them both for when you put them back together. On a manual transmission car, release all the flange bolts. The next step is to get the propeller shaft loose and out of the car. While installing, place the slip yoke onto the shaft coming from the transmission/transfer case and ensure the marks are matched up. On manual transmission, place the propeller shaft in the same way, align the marks, insert the bolts and tighten them to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). When the propeller has two sections, place the center bearing matching the reference marks and tighten all the bolts to 40 ft.-lb. or 54 Nm. After that, put together the reference marks on the propeller shaft and pinion flange, set in fresh companion flange bolts and tighten them to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).
