2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Shift Cable on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before starting any work on the shift cable, position the ignition in ACC. After removing the trim on the lower instrument panel, unplug the park lock cable from the ignition cylinder. Should you need better access, remove the floor console to get the park lock cable. If you can get to them, remove the bolts securing the cover over the gearshift and park lock system, take off the cover and put it aside. Release the lock cable connection with the transmission lever by pushing its retainer tab and sliding it out with a screwdriver. Park the ignition key in the ACC position before you link the park lock cable to the ignition cylinder and fasten it to the tool retainer under the panel. Attach any cosmetic and functional panelling that was taken out of the vehicle. Pass the park lock cable to where you found the shift mechanism, join the cable core to the shift cam and fix the cable housing to the shift mechanism. Change the park lock cable when it's needed. Should those bolts be there, cover the gearshift and other cables with the shield and attach it with the holding screws. Now is the time to reinstall the floor console assembly.
