2007 Chrysler Town & Country Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Shoe on 2007 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: Before you get started, set the parking brake on an AWD and loosen the hub nut so the hub/bearing and axle shaft do not move. Lift up the car and get the wheel and tire off. Start with the cotter pin and nut retainer from the outer C/V stub shaft, then the spring washer and end with the hub nut and its washer for the AWD. With the parking brake released, let slack into the rear park brake cables with the adjuster lockout; grab the front park brake cable, pull it downward and secure it using locking pliers behind the second body outrigger bracket. Loose the caliper guide pin bolts, then raise the front of the caliper slightly and pull the rear up from the adapter to separate the caliper, so the flexible brake hose is not harmed. Remove the rotor, the bolt connecting the park brake cable to the adapter and the park brake cable from the actuator lever and from the adapter by applying pressure with a 1/2 wrench to the locking tabs on the cable retainer. In AWD, unmount the ABS wheel speed sensor head from the hub/bearing, but for FWD, remove the secondary retaining clip, lift up on the metal clip, let go to allow removal of the sensor and then pull it away from the hub and bearing. Remove the hardware that secures the hub/bearing to the axle, then lift out the hub/bearing being careful not to damage it; if the adapter won't come loose easily, gently tap the adapter with a soft-face hammer to help remove both parts. Get assistance and use Remover, Special Tool 8214-1, to remove the hub/bearing from the caliper adapter without doing any damage to the inner race. You should first place the adapter where the park brake cable links to the axle and then fasten it in a vise using the positioned anchor boss from the park brake cable. Remove the lower return spring from both the main and trailing park brake shoes, then take away the hold down spring and pin on the leading shoe and the adjuster on both shoes. Start by rolling the bottom of the leading park brake shoe inward and when the top comes free of the anchor, unfasten the top return springs from the leading shoe. Do the same procedure for the trailing park brake shoe-disconnect the top return springs, the hold down spring and the pin, then remove the shoe from the adapter. Then, pull out the park brake shoe actuator from the adapter and check it for any unusual wearing at the pivot.
