2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair the 68RFE Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2007 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: When handling the 68Rfe Automatic Transmission fluid and filter chnage, start by hoisting and lifting the vehicle on safety stands before you place a deep, flat pan under the transmission pan. Unscrew the bolts at the sides and front that tie the pan to the transmission and at the rear loosen the bolts just a bit, then start pulling the front of the pan apart to let the fluid drain. After placing the pan upside down, take out the rest of the bolts and carefully lower it, stopping at the transmission, so any liquid left over can be poured into the drain pan. Take out the screw holding the primary oil filter to the valve body, pull the filter out, separate it from the pump and body and place the collected fluid into the drain pan. If the seal on the oil filter in the oil pump looks perfect or is already in place, wash and reuse it; otherwise, discard it. If you're replacing the cooler return filter, use Oil Filter Wrench 8321 to remove it and appropriately discard the old transmission fluid and filters. At the bottom of the pan or on the magnet, check for large amounts of metal. Just a little clutch material is Ok as long as the transmission isn't slipping or causing lag. After cleaning the pan and the magnet with the right solvent, take off the original sealing material from the transmission case and pan using a gasket scraper. The primary filter seal should be installed fully against the oil pump body and not on the filter neck during installation. Where needed, replace the primary oil filter seal in the oil pump inlet bore with 6960-A Installer or a fitting tool of your choice. Fit the replacement filter on the bottom of the valve body and into the oil pump, after which use a screwdriver to fasten the screw on the filter to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). If your old cooler return filter is faulty, installing a new one is required, torquing it to a value of 9.5 Nm (84 in.lbs.). Spread a bead of Mopar Rtv sealant on the transmission case area, put the pan where it belongs, bolt the pan to the case and tighten them to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Afterwards, lower the car and properly fill the transmission with Mopar Atf +4.
