Work one of the small flat-bladed tools or some equivalents into the gaps to remove the retaining clips while you are pulling away the ball socket. Pull up the clips a tiny bit so that the ball studs come free. After that, separate the support cylinder from both the upper and lower ball studs. Not opening the liftgate before you remove the support cylinders is very important, because the pressure inside them may cause harm or vehicle damage. Never try to take apart or fix the support cylinders after removing them.
