2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Change the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Get the car on safety stands and support it, then position a big, flat pan below where the transmission pan will be removed. Take out the bolts linking the front and sides of the pan to the gearbox, ease off the bolts on the rear and carefully lift the front of the pan so fluid drains inside it. After draining, hold the pan level to take out the last bolts and slowly lift it away from the transmission, pouring out any left-over fluid into the drain pan. Take out the connecting screw (1), remove the filter from the valve body and pump and drain the fluid into the drain pan. If the seal of the oil filter in the oil pump is poorly installed or broken, take it out and discard it, but if it is fine, it can be reused. Use Oil Filter Wrench 8321 to detach the cooler return filter (2), if needed. Dispose of your old transmission fluid and filters in the correct way. Check the underside of the pan and the magnet for too much metal; a little clutch material is acceptable as long as it doesn't cause the car to slip or lag shifting. With a liquid suitable for the job, scrub the pan and magnet and then scrape off the old sealing material on the transmission case and pan. Don't install the primary oil filter seal on the collar of the filter; install it against the oil pump body when putting on the filter. Should you find the cone seal damaged or escaped, replace the main oil filter seal in the oil pump inlet line using a proper installation tool. Set the replacement filter in place on the valve body followed by the oil pump, then attach the screw to the main filter and screw it in until it reaches 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). Should you need a new filter, replace the current one on the transmission and tighten it to a torque of 9.5 Nm (7 ft.lbs.). Wipe a layer of Mopar(R) RTV sealant around the gasket on the transmission, set the pan in place and put all bolts in until they reach 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Lower the vehicle again and put in Mopar(R) ATF +4.
