2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter in a 545RFE on 2008 Dodge Ram 1500?
    A: You should start by raising the car on safety stands and then put a deep drain pan under the transmission pan. Permit drainage by removing the bolts that fasten the sides and front of the pan to the transmission and the bolts on the rear, then gently pull the front of the pan upwards. With the pan still level, unscrew the remaining bolts and pull it out, pouring what's left in the drain pan. After that, take out the screw that connects the primary oil filter to the valve body, separate the filter from the valve body and oil pump and drain the fluid from the filter into your pan. If the seal in the oil pump's oil filter is damaged or is just barely installed, remove it and discard it. Should you change the cooler return filter, use Oil Filter Wrench 8321 to extract it and make sure the used transmission fluid is properly handled and filters are thrown away. Determine if the metal proofing on the clutch material is building up either in the pan or on the magnet, but do not worry as long as your transmission is not slipping or the shifting is lagging. After removing any grease, wash the pan and magnet again with a solvent and use a gasket scraper to eliminate the old sealing material from the case of the transmission. Be sure to place the primary oil filter seal properly against the oil pump body, avoiding the filter neck while you install it. Should a replacement filter seal be required, the oil pump inlet bore can be fitted using Installer 6960-A or a similar tool. Put the new filter on the valve body and place it into the oil pump, then tighten the screw to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). Should you need to, put in a new cooler return filter and tighten it to 9.5 Nm (84 in.lbs.). Coat the transmission case with Mopar Rtv sealant, line up the pan, place the pan bolts in position and tighten each to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Lower the vehicle and fill the transmission with Atf +4 from Mopar.
