Before checking the engine coolant thermostat on a 5.7L, take off the negative battery cable. After that, empty the cooling system. After that, release the clamp and hose attached to the thermostat housing. When that is done, remove the bolts that hold the thermostat housing, then get rid of the housing and then the thermostat.
