The Chrysler 300 Starter provides the initial rotation that converts electrical energy from the battery to rotational mechanical torque. The Starter draws a heavy current through a thick cable to an externally mounted solenoid that, when the ignition key is rotated to START power, operates the motor by moving the drive gear into the flywheel or flexplate. This compact unit attaches directly to the Chrysler 300 engine block. Inside the Starter case, a rotating armature is either surrounded by field coils or permanent magnets. The electromagnetic force caused by a rotating armature turns the drive. The drive may be connected directly or through a gear reduction. The gear reduction increases torque without increasing the size of the unit. The Starter incorporates both electrical and mechanical parts in a single sealed housing. Inside the engine bay of the Chrysler 300, a special overrunning clutch permits automatic disengagement of the drive following engine firing. The design prevents damage. The control circuit safety components are a neutral safety switch for an automatic and a clutch switch for a manual, which prevents a crank when the vehicle gear is engaged. These features provide every Chrysler 300 model with reliable Starter performance.

Chrysler 300 Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to Install a Starter Motor for a 2.7L Engine on Chrysler 300?
    A:
For the 2.7L engine, set the starter above the transmission and exhaust and move it over the intermediate shafts up toward the engine. Set the dust shield, with TOP markings, into place with the plastic retainer at the back. Install the dust shield on the engine block and bolt the starter firmly onto it. Tighten the bolts to 54.2 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Connect the electrical part to the starter, move the notification cock into place with the corresponding cock on the extension and add the intermediate shaft to the extension. Put the shafts side by side and insert the pinch bolt to secure the intermediate shaft to the extension; then tighten it to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.). Following that, fit the underbody splash shield, lower the vehicle, take out the steering wheel holder and reattach the negative Battery Cable.
  • Q:
How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor on a 2.7L Engine on Chrysler 300?
    A:
The process begins with removing the negative battery cable from the battery so there is no power running to the starter motor. Hold the wheel using a Steering Wheel holder and then use the lift's legs to support and keep the vehicle upright. Uninstall the starter assembly and the underbody splash shield. After that, unscrew the intermediate steering shaft center bolt and split the upper and lower shafts. Remove the connection to the battery from the starter and take off the three mounting bolts as well as the wiring clip. Move the starter down and forward, make it go up around the exhaust and past the steering shaft before taking it out of the car.
