  To begin working on a universal joint with snap rings, first strike the bearing cap's edge with a drift to loosen the snap rings. Unscrew snap rings 1 from both sides of the yoke and install the yoke so the grease fitting, if included, points upward. Rest a socket with a diameter just slightly smaller than the lower bearing cap's underneath the yoke, press the upper bearing cap toward the lowered cap using a socket that is larger than the lower cap on top of it and then combine the upper and lower bearing caps into the yoke. After pressing the bearing cap down on the yoke ear, tap the yoke near it to help the cap come loose if it isn't easy to remove by hand. After taking off the bearing cap, flip the yoke in the press, straighten cross 1 and keep pressing until you can remove the rest of the bearing cap 2. Keep the cross straight as you remove it to stop the bearing cap from touching and scoring the interior of the yoke bore.

  After removing the knurled end from the tube yoke, use a drift to tap the ring insert at the bearing cap on the exterior tube. Pull off the snap rings 1 from each side and place the yoke so the grease fitting, if there is one, is facing upward. Place a socket whose inner dimension receives the bearing cap under the yoke in a press and use a different socket whose outer diameter is less than the cap to press the lower cap through the yoke. If the cap Won't pull out when pressed, tap the yoke ear close to it to release it. Once the bearing cap has been taken off, use the press to turn the yoke over, straighten cross 1 and remove the remaining cap 2 once pressed. Keep the cross or bearing cap straight as you take it out, so you don't risk damaging the walls of the yoke.
