In Chrysler Cirrus cars, the Shock Absorber is substantially employed in the suspension system cooperation with the struts to offer steadiness and control. Thus, the kinetic energy is transformed to heat, which prevents bouncing and dampens vibrations, enhancing the driving experience. Throughout the years, Cirrus vehicles apply Shock Absorbers of two types; twin-tube and mono-tube in which the mechanisms of controlling of the hydraulic fluid flow, as well as the performance of the vessels, depends on the varied driving conditions. Derivative control types such as PSD and ASD take the Shock Absorber's responses to new heights when it comes to specific driving conditions, whereas other modern technologies, including electrorheological and magnetorheological dampers, open the door to semi-active and adaptive types of suspension systems for additional comfort and controllability.

Chrysler Cirrus Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Shock Absorber in the Rear Assembly on Chrysler Cirrus?
    A:
You should remove the rear shock assembly from the vehicle before doing any servicing or repair work. Use the strut spring compressor Pentastar Service Equipment (PSE) part W-7200 or an identical tool, applying pressure on the spring in the way recommended by the manufacturer. If both items are needing service, note which side faces up on the coil spring and the shock assembly. Set the lower hooks in the compressor frame and install the clamp to support the shock and then loosen the nut at the other end of the shaft. Push down on the spring to completely remove tension from the upper mounting bracket. Lock the shock rod with a special socket Snap-On A136 or an equal part and carefully move the rope or retainer nut off while supporting the rod. Then, take off the washer, upper shock mount and the rod bushings. Unfasten the upper coil spring isolator, slide down the lower shock rod bushing washer, take off the dust shield and cup from the shock absorber rod. After that, take off the clamp from the coil spring and remove the shock absorber, along with the lower spring isolator, jounce bumper and collar. Make sure you look over all parts for the following signs of damage: the shock for rod binding, the upper mount of the shock for any breaks, the isolator bushings for wear, same with the dust shield, the jounce bumper for cracks and the coating on the coil spring. To change the coil spring, back off the drive, loosen the compression and lift out the spring to release all tension. Bring the lower section of the coil spring into the compressor, then place the upper hooks in position. After that, release the compressed coil spring a little to attach the shock absorber and upper mount. First replace the lower shock rod bushing in the upper shock mount, then the upper shock rod isolator bushing and sleeve. Put the lower coil spring isolator onto the lower spring seat of the shock absorber, then the jounce bumper on the rod and finally, put the collar on so that the part with the undercut is facing down. Place the murfist through the spring coil until the lower spring seat comes against the spring and hold in position with a clamp. Attach the dust shield and cup on top of the jounce bumper and then fit the washer over the lower shock rod bushing. Apply the upper spring isolator to the coil spring, add the upper shock mount bracket and rod bushings on the shock absorber. Set the upper shock rod bushing retainer washer over the bushing, putting the willowy part on top and add the shock retaining nut, tightening it to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) using a special socket and a crow foot wrench. As you slowly let down the spring tension, match the upper mount studs to the bolt hole in the lower bracket and confirm that the spring, isolator and mount are all aligned. After you disconnect the clamp and shock assembly from the compressor, install the assembly into the vehicle again.
  • Q: How to Properly Remove and Reassemble a Shock Absorber on Chrysler Cirrus?
    A:
The shock assembly must be taken out of the vehicle before disassembly and assembly and the coil spring should be compressed with the Pentastar Service Equipment (PSE) tools W-7200 or a similar tool, following the instructions in the manual. Always mark the shock and coil spring so that you know which goes back where during installation. After setting the lower hooks and the clamp onto the lower end of the coil spring in the compressor, position the shock assembly there, with the shock in place. Then, remove the nut from the top of the shock shaft. Get rid of all spring tension and then, using a Snap-On A136 or an equivalent, prevent the shock rod from moving while you remove the retainer. Disconnect the upper bushing retainer washer, remove the clamp on the bottom coil spring, take off the shock absorber together with its lower spring isolator, jounce bumper, cup, dust boot and last washer. When reinstalling the coil spring, lower mounting bracket, rod bushings, lower coil spring isolator or lower control arm, refer to the spring compressor position of the lower coil spring end. On open removing port of the compressor is facing upward. Open the port and release the tension on the coil spring. Take out the rod from the spring compressor and uninstall the upper (soft portion) and lower (hollow sleeve) isolator bushings from the shock bracket. Open the lower shock rod by removing the bushing retainer washer, dust shield, cup, jounce bumper and spring isolator from the shock absorber. Check every component to see if it is damaged and update it if you see any issues. The upper coil spring isolator should be installed on the upper mounting bracket first, with the sleeve going into the lower shock absorber rod isolator bushing after. Fit the spring compressor under the coil spring with it in the original orientation, then put the upper mounting bracket on top of the spring. We need to compress the coil spring, fit the lower spring isolator end first to the shock absorber and then install the jounce bumper pointed end up. Add the collar to the shock absorber rod, the dust shield and then the cup, making certain the cup is touching the collar. Add the lower shock rod bushing retainer washer, slip the shock into position at the bottom of the coil spring until it hits its seat. Fasten the shock absorber to the coil spring by using a clamp, set the upper shock rod bushing retainer washer over it so that the concave part faces upward and tighten the shock assembly retainer nut with 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) torque using a suitable socket. Delicately take the tension off the coil spring, checking that the upper mounting bracket, isolator and coil spring are properly aligned, remove the clamp and shock assembly from the mount and slide the shock assembly back onto the car.
