Before fitting
Piston rings on the piston, measure the gap at the end of each ring with a feeler gauge. The identification mark on the rings should always point to the upper area of the piston. Start with the oil ring expander, then put in the upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and end with No. 1 upper piston ring. You should begin by adding the oil ring expander, add the upper rail next and finally add the lower rail. Hold the piston ring in place, slide one end of the side rail into the groove between the piston ring and the oil ring expander and press down until set, never putting a piston ring expander inside. Once finished, place No. 2 piston ring into position and then No. 1 piston ring. Place the piston ring end gaps so that the oil ring expander has a minimum gap of 45° away from the side rail gaps, to prevent putting the ring gap in line with the piston pin or thrust direction.
