A urethane adhesive applied cold is used to join the windshield to the window frame and primer makes sure the adhesive sticks to the window's opening area. Removing a windshield can be tough, because it reinforces the roof and the urethane bonding is tricky to cut or clean. These parts should be on hand at the parts shop when you arrive to remove them. Cut the urethane adhesive along the pinch weld with a sharp knife when replacing a replaced windshield, but for unbroken glass removed inside, cut it from the interior with a reciprocating or oscillating power knife. Remove the inside rear view mirror along with the
Wiper Arms, cover the windshield and pull off the A-pillar panels and cowl. Then, protect the instrument panel and hood. Pull the windshield molding loose at its bottom location on the A-pillar and then use a blade to cut the urethane adhesive bonding it to the A-pillars, roof header and cowl. The same initial steps should be taken and after that, use a power knife to cut the urethane and take out the windshield for interior removal. Opening the left front door glass before installing will prevent air pressure in the passenger area and the urethane should cure for no less than a full day. The bonding material should be smooth and match the design of the replacement windshield and be sure to clean the support spacers prior to installation. Install the replacement windshield in the place clamp it against the pinch urethane adhesive so that it stays even. Use an ammonia-based cleaner to clean the windshield, attach the molding and spread Glass Prep and Glass Primer along the edge of the glass, so it dries. Peel away the old urethane, add pinch weld primer and if using low viscosity adhesive, put in compression spacers. Stick a line of urethane onto the fence around the windshield, set the windshield in place and make sure the molding is touching the car all around. Wipe off any uneven urethane, make sure your molding is attached with masking tape and put in the A-pillar trim, cowl cover, wipers and the inside rear view mirror. When the curing is done, take off the tape and test the fix with water.
