In the Dodge Avenger cars, the Ball Joint is an essential component of the suspension functions and also bears direct relation to the steering mechanism being associated with the control arms and the steering knuckles. This component enables the car to rotate or swivel in various directions and this makes it possible for the car to respond to the condition on the road and the command of the driver as given through the steering wheel. Basically made of steel, the Dodge Avenger Ball Joint comprises of a bearing stud and socket, the former of which is encapsulated in a rubber boot that acts to shield the ball joint from damage that arises from exposure to dirt while at the same time ensuring oil is supplied adequately to the bearing stud. Specifically, it is possible that Dodge Avenger can have different Ball joints, such as loaded and unloaded type. Loaded ball joints are responsible for withstanding the weight of the vehicle whereas the unloaded ball joints are only responsible for holding the alignment of the vehicle. Nevertheless, Ball Joints are not exempt from wearing out after sometime due to wear and tear and in particular, lack of lubrication may cause noises and unusual wear of the tires. Currently the Dodge Avenger has fixed Ball Joints and replacement options of variable Ball Joints that give better direction control and thus makes the car more stable on the road.

Dodge Avenger Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint on Dodge Avenger?
    A:
First, fit Remover/Installer 8441-1 with Installer 9964-1 and Installer 9964-2. Set the ball joint stem down into Installer 9964-2. Place the assembly onto the knuckle and simply use your hand to turn the screw-driver. After that, tighten the screw-drive with hand-tools until the flange on the ball joint is against the base of the knuckle. Unscrew the screws and get the tools out. Afterward, position a new snap-ring into the groove of the ball joint and hammer it in with the drift punch. Put the hub and bearing in the knuckle into place on the half shaft C/V splines. Push down the lower ball joint stud so it fits inside the hole in the Control Arm and screw in a ball joint stud nut, tightening it by 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Place the wheel speed sensor head into the knuckle, attach it with a tightened screw at 12 Nm (106 in. lbs.) and then attach the routing clip to secure the wheel speed sensor cable. Now it's time to fit the new brake rotor, the caliper for the disc brake and the adapter. Clear any foreign substances from the middle of the C/V joint on the half shaft and install the hub nut on the end, making sure it's snug. Have a helper press on the brake to stop any back and forth motion in the hub. Then, tighten the hub nut with a torque wrench to 132 Nm (97 ft. lbs.). Put the tire and wheel assembly in place, tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), drop the car and complete wheel alignment if it is important.
