- Q: How to Service and Repair the Axle Shaft and CV Boot on Dodge Caliber?A:When servicing or repairing a Constant Velocity Joint Boot, take the vehicle apart and pull the halfshaft assembly with the bad boot off. After that, remove the big clamp from the CV joint housing and the smaller clamp from the interconnecting shaft, both of which secure the CV sealing boots. Get rid of the boot from the outer CV joint housing and push it down the center shaft. Clean off grease to show the outer CV joint and shaft that is connected to it. Put the shaft into a vise, with protective covers protecting it and use a soft-faced hammer to sharply tap the CV joint housing end to dislodge it from the circlip inside the shaft. Release the outer CV joint from the interconnecting shaft by sliding it off and tap it off if that helps. Before removing the boot, pull off the bigger circlip on the shaft. It is important to check the outer CV joint assembly and interconnecting joint for major wear; if there is too much wear evident, having to replace the entire halfshaft assembly because the connecting parts are not replaceable.

The sealing boot should be fitted evenly on the interconnecting shaft clamp and then tightly clamped to the shaft (2), located over the bridge of C-4975A, by screwing the nut until the clamp jaws are together (2) without dimpling, stretching or misshaping the seal. After aligning the outer boot sealing groove on the outer joint housing, put the outer boot onto the clamp and hand tighten the nut until the pinch point achieves minimum thickness or the retaining clamp is tightened all the way (4). Next, reinstall the halfshaft where the new boot will be used.
