The Dodge Charger Starter utilizes battery electricity to create the mechanical energy that allows an engine to crank and run. A heavy-gauge cable supplies power to an externally mounted solenoid which, when energized, pushes the Starter drive gear into the Charger flywheel or flexplate ring gear. The Starter consists of a rotating armature whose rotation within field coils or permanent magnets, brushes, and a commutator conducts current, while an overrunning clutch disengages the drive once the engine fires up. The control circuit, which is comprised of the ignition switch and a relay and either a neutral safety switch or a clutch safety switch, prevents cranking of the engine when the vehicle is in gear. Alongside the popular direct-drive design, the gear reduction Starter employs a reduction gear between armature and drive, yielding greater torque from the same electrical input. The solenoid engages only on start to protect the Starter from overspeed. Dodge's electrical system promptly spins the Charger crankshaft, allowing for quick engagement, letting Dodge drivers easily predict the next start, and keeping the Dodge Charger handy for use any day.

Dodge Charger Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to Install a Starter Motor for a 2.7L Engine on Dodge Charger?
    A:
Move the starter motor past the transmission, exhaust and the intermediate shafts and angling it upward to the engine to install it for your 2.7L engine. Pull the plastic retainer over the round opening in the dust shield, placing the TOP mark upwards and screw the dust shield on to the engine block with the help of the retainer. After that, set the starter and apply its bolts, making sure they are tightened to 54.2 Nm or 40 ft. lbs. Slide the electrical connection onto the starter, fit the flat parts in each shaft together and move the intermediate shaft over, lining the holes. Slide the pinch bolt onto the intermediate shaft, secure it to the extension and tighten it to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.). Lastly, secure the underbody splash shield and then lower the vehicle, remove the piece that holds the steering wheel and link the negative Battery Cable once more.
  • Q:
How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor on a 2.7L Engine on Dodge Charger?
    A:
Before you service or repair the starter motor on a 2.7L engine, remove the negative Battery Cable. After that, attach a steering wheel holder to hold the steering wheel in the middle position. Lift up the vehicle, then remove the underbody splash shield. Proceed to putting on the starter and remove the intermediate steering shaft center bolt. After taking off the bolt, part the upper and lower sections of the intermediate steering shaft. Remove the link between the starter and the electrical, then take out the three bolts that hold the starter and the wiring clip. Pull the starter toward you and down, curve it up and around the exhaust and slip it past the intermediate steering shaft, then take it out of the car.
