Dodge Dakota Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove a Front Steering Knuckle on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
Raise and support the car, pull off the wheel and tire first and then remove the front steering knuckle. After that, take out the Brake Caliper, rotor, shield and ABS wheel speed sensor (if your car has it). With 4X4 models, first remove the front halfshaft nut. Take off the tie rod end nut and then use the tool C-3894-A to remove the tie rod from the knuckle. Be careful when using puller 8677, so that the Ball Joint seal is not damaged during separation. Loosen the top nut from the ball joint and use puller 8677 to take the ball joint off the knuckle. Place the lower control arm on a hydraulic jack and take away the nut from the lower ball joint, using puller 8677 to remove the ball joint from the knuckle. Once you have the nut off, remove the hub/bearing bolts, then take out the hub/bearing from the knuckle, so you can pull the knuckle off.
  • Q: How to Install a Steering Knuckle on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
Be sure to use mineral spirits to bring both the stud tapers and bearing surface on the knuckle as clean as possible before installing the knuckle. Place the hub/bearing onto the steering knuckle and tighten all the bolts to 163 Nm (120 ft.lbs.). After that, connect the knuckle to both the upper and lower Ball Joints. Start with the upper ball joint nut and tighten to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.), then go to the lower ball joint nut and tighten fully to 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.). After the jack comes out from the lower control arm, set the Tie Rod End in place and fasten the nut to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.). On a 4X4 model, set the front halfshaft into the hub/bearing, then fit and tighten the halfshaft nut to 251 Nm (185 ft.lbs.). When ABS is installed, fit the wheel speed sensor, brake shield, rotor and caliper together. After that, put in the wheel and tire assembly, take off the support bracket, lower your vehicle and get a wheel alignment done.
