To service and repair the backing plate, begin by removing the wheel and tire assembly along with the brake drum. Next, take out the brake shoe assembly and disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. Compress the parking brake cable retainer tabs and push the retainer and cable through the support plate. Disconnect the brake line at the wheel cylinder and remove the wheel cylinder from the support plate. Then, take out the axle shaft and remove the bolts that attach the support plate to the axle before removing the support plate itself. For installation, apply a bead of silicone sealer around the axle mounting surface of the support plate and install it on the axle flange, tightening the attaching bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Next, apply a bead of silicone sealer around the wheel cylinder mounting surface and install the wheel cylinder, followed by the brake line in the wheel cylinder. Install the parking brake cable in the support plate and then the axle shaft. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever on the secondary shoe and install the brake shoes on the support plate, adjusting them to the drum with a brake gauge. Finally, reinstall the brake drum and wheel and tire assembly, and bleed the brake system.
