The Dodge Durango Rack And Pinion is one of the vehicles' parts that incorporates the rotational movement of the steering wheel into the lateral movement of the wheels. Such mechanism is a rack and pinion; it is built in a metal tube screwed on the frame; the pinion is connected with the shaft of the steering column. Dodge Durango models, like most vehicles on today's road, have power-assisted rack and pinion steering where the steering by the turning of the steering wheel applies pressure that in return transfers fluid to shift the rack left or right in a tubular fashion. Dodge Durango steering rack problems can occur when seals wearing, leaking, or gears become worn, which signals stiffness in the steering assembly, grinding sound, and drifting. This is why it is very important to perform regular maintenance and changing worn out parts to allow efficient steering and increase safety on the road. Dodge Durango's rack and pinion system is functional in creating response to driver inputs and enhancing maneuverability's stability.
Q: How to Prepare for and Complete a Rack and Pinion Installation on Dodge Durango?
A:
You should inspect the rack and pinion bushings, replace worn or damaged parts before you fit the rack and pinion and use new bolts and nuts. Installing (7) the rack and pinion onto the vehicle, screw in all mounting nuts and bolts (4&6) so they are tightened to 258 Nm (190 ft. lbs.). Grasp the hoses of the power steering and tighten the pressure hose to 27 ft. lb. and the return hose to 48 ft. lb., then join them to the rack and pinion. Slide the shaft coupler (1) over rack and pinion (3), add the new lower pinch bolt (2) and tighten it to 57 Nm (42 ft. lbs.). Once the studs and tapers are clean, put the Tie Rod Ends in their studs, then tighten them firmly with 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). When installing, install a Y-pipe on the spark plug on all 3.7L and 4.7L engines (3). After the front crossmember (2), put the front tires into place. Place the vehicle on the ground, free the steering wheel and pump the fluid into the system. After the other steps, adjust the angle of your toes.
Q: How to Remove the Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on Dodge Durango?
A:
Before taking off the rack and pinion, drain a considerable amount of power steering fluid from the pump and immobilize the Steering Wheel. Elevate the vehicle and then take off the front tires. After that, remove the tie rod nuts and use Puller 8677 to separate the Tie Rod Ends from the knuckles. Take out the rack and pinion pinch bolt and remove the lower steering coupling. Turn the rack and pinion to the furthest right position and take off the exhaust Y-pipe, if you have 3.7L or 4.7L engines. Take the power steering lines off the rack and pinion before you remove its crossmember. Once done, detach the rack and pinion mounting bolts, washers and nuts, move the rack and pinion forward to gain room, slide it to the right and lift it away to the left.
