  Before repairing or servicing a single Cardan joint, take out the propeller shaft. Gently tap the bearing cap assembly with a soft drift to move the snap rings out of the way and remove both snap rings from the yoke's outer surface. Clamp the yoke in a machine press or vise so that a large socket fits the bearing cap and lift the cap up if it comes with a grease fitting. Put a socket on the upper bearing cap that measures smaller than the upper cap, press it through the yoke and the lower bearing cap should release. If you can't pull the bearing cap out by hand after pushing, use light taps on the yoke near the bearing cap to knock it loose. After the first bearing cap has been removed, stand the yoke upside down, straighten the cross in its open hole and gently press the end to take out the remaining bearing cap. When you install, be sure the cross or bearing cap is in line to keep the walls of the yoke bore from getting scored. When assembling, smear the inside of each yoke bore with Grade 1 or 2 extreme pressure (EP) N.L.G.I. grease. Lock the end of the cross down into the yoke with the lube fitting pointing straight up if you have it. Lay the bearing cap above the trunnion and place it so that the needle bearings stay upright within the yoke bore. Push the bearing cap into the yoke bore until a snap ring can be installed, then add the snap ring. Work on the opposite bearing cap and should the joint feel stiff or bind, use the soft hammer to press the needle bearings into place on the yoke. Slot a little grease into the lube fitting, if it exists, as this will protect the shaft as it is reinstalled.

  First, set the joint in the flange along with one bearing cap. Place receiver 1 against flange 2 and position bearing cap 2 onto them, press it down until you notice the snap ring groove 1. After that, place snap ring 2 onto bearing 1. Place bearing cap press number 3 over receiver number 2 on bearing cap and flange 1 and push the cap in until the snap ring groove has passed through the flange. Snap ring 1 onto the outer ring of bearing cap 2. Place flange 1 into yoke 2 with the U-joint, then lower press 2 and fit receiver 1 on top and bearing cap 3 onto the yoke. Depress the bearing cap until the snap ring slot is inside the yoke and fasten snap ring 2 onto bearing cap 1. At the end, fit bearing cap 2 with receiver 3 onto bearing cap 1 and the yoke and push the bearing cap all the way until the yoke engages the snap ring groove. Then, insert snap ring 2 into the groove of bearing cap 1.
