Begin by removing everything that holds back the engine assembly and then pull off the transaxle. After placing the engine on an engine stand, take out the
Oil Filter,
Oil Pan, oil pick-up tube and
Timing Chain cover. After that, get out the timing chain and sprockets and remove the crankshaft rear oil seal and its retainer. Crank the rotor until you reach the connecting rod cap, notice where it is positioned, use a note-taking device and gently take off the connecting rod cap to keep the crankshaft bearing surfaces safe. Follow the same steps for all the bearings and once you've removed the main bearing bolts and washers on the 3.8L engine, put in new bolt and washer assemblies before reattaching. Unscrew the cap bolts on the main bearing and remove the caps that hold them. After that, remove the crankshaft from the block of the engine. Review the journals for more wear, taper or marking than allowed, check that limits of taper or out of round are still correct and do not grind the journals more than 0.305 mm (0.012 in.) below the standard diameter, skipping the No. 3 main bearing's thrust face and the fillets of the crank pin or bearings. After finishing, smooth the rough edges on all crankshaft oil holes and make sure all passages are clean. Be sure to polish nodular cast iron crankshafts while rotating them in the normal direction. When installing, apply oil to the main crankshaft bearing halves, put them in the engine block, place the crankshaft and execute the main bearing setting procedure. Check the main cap bolts for signs of stretching and change them if stretched, always inspecting those bolts before you use them again. Fit and tighten the main bearing caps and bolts firmly onto the main bearings, then apply a turn and a quarter more. For the 3.8L engine, also install and tighten the new cross bolts and washer assemblies to 45 ft. lbs. First, place and attach the connecting rod and caps, then add the rear oil seal to the crankshaft and finally, the crankshaft sprocket, timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Afterward, add the
Timing Cover cover, link oil pick-up tube, install the oil pan and attach the transaxle back to the engine.
