Before touching the lash adjuster, make sure the engine is hot and at operating conditions to pressurize the oil in the motor. Turn the engine until the
Rocker Arm reaches the bottom circle on the cam. When setting the intake rocker arm positions, push the pin of Release Probe 8351 outward by 20 mm (0.787 in.) and fit it into the lash adjuster service access hole. Carefully take steps to clear out the internal check ball of the lash adjuster. When the check ball is not seated, press down on the rocker arm until you hear the valve click, making sure the whole hydraulic lash adjuster inside the rocker arm is retracted for at least a second. Slowly pull out the rocker arm to allow the lash adjuster to extend which will let non-aerated oil into the carburetor's high-pressure chamber. After that, remove Release Probe 8351, allowing the check ball to drop into place. If you still find sponginess, keep following the treatment. In case the rocker arm(s) continue to feel spongy, it is best to replace them. For exhaust rocker arm positions, insert two extendable Release Probes 8351, each with its pins jutting out by approximately 20 mm (0.787 in.), into the lash adjuster access holes. After gently uncorking both check balls, push the rocker arm into the valve tip until the hydraulic lash adjuster collapses and hold it for at least one second. After releasing the rocker arm, put back the high-pressure chamber oil and then detach the two Release Probes to let the check balls sit. Feel the area where you sit; if it's still slightly moist, redo the steps. If the spongy feeling isn't eliminated, you should change the rocker arms. After that, place the cylinder head cover(s) in place.
